🛑 The Business Challenge
regionSEE's original front end was built on Silverlight - a Microsoft browser-plugin framework that has since been deprecated and dropped from modern browsers. A plugin-dependent UI is a dead end: it can't run on mobile, and its long-term viability was tied to a technology Microsoft had already stopped investing in.
- Plugin dependency: Silverlight requires a browser plugin that modern browsers no longer support
- No mobile support: a plugin-based UI cannot run on phones or tablets
- Deprecated platform risk: continuing to build on Silverlight meant building on a technology with no future
- Feature parity: the rebuild needed to preserve employee tracking, scheduling, and reporting without disrupting active users
Modernization Strategy
Full technology migration off the Silverlight plugin onto server-rendered ASP.NET MVC 5.0
Solution: Plugin-Free Platform Migration
We rebuilt the application's front end on ASP.NET MVC 5.0 as standard responsive HTML, removing the Silverlight plugin dependency entirely while carrying over the platform's core functionality.
- Framework Migration: Replaced the Silverlight client with server-rendered ASP.NET MVC 5.0 views enhanced with AngularJS and jQuery
- Mapping & Tracking: Rebuilt employee and customer location tracking on the Google Maps API
- Scheduling & Reporting: Carried over the scheduler and reporting modules used to manage field visits
- Responsive Design: Rebuilt the admin and field UI to work across desktop, tablet, and mobile - impossible under the old plugin-based front end
Migration & Testing Approach
Rebuilt the front end from scratch on MVC 5.0 while preserving the underlying tracking, scheduling, and reporting functionality
